PUPPHA VAGGA 

( Flowers  )


                                          1.      . Ko imam pathavim vijessati

                                                                    yamalokan ca iman sadevakam

                                                  Ko dhammapadam sudesitam 

                                                                   kusalo puppham iva pacessati

                                      THE NOBLE DISCIPLE WILL CONQUER THY  SELF  
        
      Meaning -  Who will comphrehend this Earth ( Self) and this realm of Yama and this 
                          World  together with the devas? Who will invetigate the well taught Path of
                          Virtue , even as an expert ( Garlend Maker ) will pick Flowers

     Meaning -    A disciple in training ( Sekha) will comprehend this earth and this realm of                         
                            Yama together with the realm of the Devas . A disciple in training will                                
                            investigate the Well -  taught path of Virtue ,even as an  Expert Garland
                           
                            Maker will pick Flowers 




                                   3.            Phemupamam Kayamimam vidithva

                                                                aricidhammam abihissambudhano

                                                 Chetvana marassa papupphakani           

                                                                adassanam maccurajassa gacche

LIKE A MIRAGE IS THE BODY 

       Meaning -  Knowing that this Body is like foam ,and comprehending its mirage - nature 
                           ,one should destroy the flower shafts of sensual passions ( Mara ) and pass 
                           beyond the sight the king of death  


                                4.              Pupphani heva pacinantam

                                                                byasattamansam naram

                                                 Suttam gamam mahogho va 
                         
                                                               maccu adaya gacchati

DEATH TAKES THE SESUAL UNAWARES 

     Meaning -  The man who gathers flowers ( of sensual pleasure ) , who's mind is 
                          distracted , death carries him off as a great flood sweeps away a sleeping 
                          Village.


                              5.             Pupphani h' eva pacinantam 

                                                                  byasattamanasam naram 

                                              Atittam yeva kamesu 

                                                                  antakao kurute vasam

         WITH UNGRTIFIED DESIRES THE SENSUAL DIES   

    Meaning -  The Man who gathers flowers ( of Sensual pleasure) , whose mind is distracted 
                         
                      , and who is in-satiate in desires , the destroyer brings under his way



 
                              6.          Yatha pi bhamaro  puppham

                                                                 vannagandham ahethayam

                                            Paleti rasam adaya 

                                                                 evam game muni care

                                 SAINTLY MONKS CAUSE NO INCONVENIENCE TO ANY 

    Meaning -   As a bee without harmimg the flower , its colour or scent , flies away ,

                        collecting only the honey , even so should the sage wander in the village



                           7.              Naparesan Vilomani 

                                                                 Na paresam katakatam

                                            Attanova avekkheyya 

                                                                 Katani akatani ca

SEEK  NOT OTHERS FAULTS BUT YOUR OWN 
       
      Meaning - Let not one seek others faults ,faults ,things left done and undone
                          by others ,but one's own deeds done and un done                  
                           



                           8.              Yatha pi ruciram puppham

                                                                 vannavantam agandhakam

                                            evam subhasita  vaca 

                                                                 aphala hoti akubbato

PRACTICE IS BETTER THAN MERE TEACHING
       
      Meaning -  As a flower that is lovely and beautiful but scentless , even so fruitless            
                           is the well spoken word of one who does not practice it . 

  


                           9.              Yatha pi ruciram puppham

                                                                 vannavantam sagandhakam

                                            Evam subhasita  vaca 

                                                                 saphala hoti sakubbato

PRACTICE IS BETTER THAN MERE TEACHING
       
      Meaning -  As a flower that is lovely and beautiful but scent -laden  , even so             
                           fruitful is the well spoken word of one who practices it .

                                                                 Kaira malagune bahu

                                              Evam jatena macenna 

                                                                 Kattabbam Kusalam Bahum

DO MUCH GOOD 
       
      Meaning -   As from a heap of Flowers many a Garland is made even so ,many Good 
                           Deeds must be done by one Born Mortal  

        


                           11.              Na puphagandho patavitam eti

                                                                na candannam tagaramallika va

                                              Satan ca dangho pativatam eti  

                                                                Sabba disa sappuriso pavati 


                           12.             Candanam tagaram va pi   

                                                                uppalam atha vassiki 

                                              Etesam gandhajatanam 

                                                                 Silagandho anuttaro

MORAL FRAGRANCE WAFTS EVERYEHERE  
       
      Meaning -   The Perfume of flowers blows not against the wind  , nor does the fragrance 
                            of sandalwood tagara and Jasmine ,but the fragrance of the virtuous man 
                            pervades every direction.

      Meaning -   Sandalwood ,tagara , lotus , jasmine:, above all kinds of fragrance, the
                            the perfume of virtue is far the best  



                         13.                   Appamatto ayam gandho

                                                                 ya yam tagaracandani

                                                  Yo ca silavantam gandho  

                                                                 vati devesu uttamo

THE SCENT OF VIRTUE IS BY FAR THE BEST 

     Meaning - Of Little Account is the fragrance of tagara or sandal; the fragrance of the 
                         virtuous , which blows even amongst the gods is supreme.

     Meaning -  Mara finds not the path of those who are virtuous , careful in living 
                         , and freed by right knowledge.

  .

     Meaning -     As upon a heap of rubbish thrown on the high way , a sweet smelling lovely                            lotus may grow , even so amongst worthless beings , a disciple of  Fully 
                          Enlightened One out shines the Blind world lings , in wisdom.  .
