PAPA VAGGA 

(  THE EVIL ) 




                            1.  Abhittharetha  Kalyane 

                                                      papa cittam nivaraye 

                               Dandham hi karoto punnam 

                                                     papasmim ramati mano  
        BE QUICK IN DOING GOOD  AND SUPPRESS THE EVIL 

 Meaning -  Make haste in doing good ; check your mind from evil ; for the mind who is slow in doing meritorious actions delights in evil. 

 

                             2.  Papan ce puriso kayira  

                                                      na tam kayira punappunam 

                               Na tamhi chandam kayiratha 

                                                    dukkho papassa uccayo  


                                   DO NO EVIL AGAIN AND AGAIN 

Meaning -  Should a person commit evil , he should not do it again and again ; he should not find pleasure therein : painful is the accumulation of the evil .

                          3.  Punnam ce puriso kayira

                                                      Kayirath etam punappunam

                               Tamhi chandam kayiratha  

                                                      sukho punnassa uccayo 


                                   DO GOOD AGAIN AND AGAIN 

Meaning -  Should a person perform a meritorious action , he should do it again and again ; he should find pleasure therein : blissful is the accumulation of merit 


                           
                           4. Papo pi passati bhadram 

                                                           yawa papam na paccati 

                               Yada ca paccati papam   

                                                        Atha papo papam passati 

                              5. Bhadro pi passati papam 

                                                        yawa bhadram na paccati 

                                  Yada ca paccati bhadram 

                                                    Atha Bhadro bhdrani passati 

                                 
                                   BY ITS EFFECTS EVIL IS KNOWN  

                                   BY ITS EFFECTS GOOD IS KNOWN 

Meaning -  4. Even an evil-doe sees good as long as evil  ripens not ; 
                      but when it bears fruit , then sees the evil results.
                  5. Even a good person sees evil so long as good ripens not ; 
                      but when it bears fruit then the good one sees 
                      the good results.

                           6.  Mavamannetha papassa 

                                                      na mam tam agamissati 

                                Udabindunipatena 

                                                       udakumbho pi purati   

                                Purati balo papassa 

                                                       thokathoham pi acinam 

THINK NOT LIGHTLY OF EVIL 
Meaning -    Do not disregard evil, saying "It will not come 
                nigh unto me ";  by the falling of drops even 
               a water jar is filled ; likewise the fool , 
               gathering little by little , ills himself with evil. 
                           7. Mavamannetha punnassa a

                                                      na mam tam agamissati

                               udabinduni patena 


                                                      udakumbho pi purati 

                                Purati dhiro punnassa 

                                                       thokathokam pi acinam  


                                   THINK NOT LIGHTLY OF GOOD 

 Meaning -  Do not disregard merit, saying " it will not come nigh unto me "; by the ling of drops even a water jar is filled; likewise the wise man,    gathering little by little, fills himself with good. 

        
                         8.    Vanijo va bhayam maggam 

                                                      appasattho mahaddhano 

                                visam jivitukamo

                                                      papani parivajjaye 


                                   SHUN EVIL LIKE A PERILOUS  PATH           

Meaning -  Just as a merchant , with a small escort and great wealth                      , avoids a perilous route , just as one desiring to 
                  live avoids poison , even so should one shun evil things.
                  gathering little by little , fills himself with good. 

                         9.    Panimhi ce vano n' assa

                                                      hareyya panina visam  

                                Nabbanam visam anveti 


                                                      natti papam akubbato 


         NO EVIL TO THOSE WHO HAVE NO BAD INTENTION 

Meaning -  If no wound there be in one's hand , one may carry
                   poison  in it . Poison does not affect one who has no  
                   wound. There is no ill for him who does no wrong. 
                     10.      Yo appadutthasa narassa dussati 

                                                      suddhassa posassa ananganassa

                                Tam eva balam pacceti papam 

                                                     sukhumo rajo pativatam ' va khitto 


             WHO HARMS THE INNOCENT COMES TO GRIEF 

Meaning -  Whoever harms a harmless person, one pure and guiltless, upon that very fool the evil recoils like fine dust thrown against the wind.
                  
                      11.      Gabbham eke uppajjanti 

                                                      nirayam papakammino 

                                Saggam sugatino yanti 

                                                     parinibbanti anasava  


                                  BIRTH DEPENDS ON ACTIONS 

Meaning -  Some are born in womb; evil doers are born in woeful states ; The well-conduct go to blissful states; the undefiled ones pass away into Nibbana .  

                   12.      Na antalikkena Samuddamajjhe 

                                                      Na pabbatanam vivaram pavissa 

                                Na vijjati so jagatippadeso


                                                     yatthatthito munceyya 'papakamma  


                                   NOBODY IS EXEMPT FROM THE EVIL KAMMA 

Meaning -  Not in the sky , nor in mid ocean , nor in a mountain cave ,                   is found  that place on earth where abiding one may 
                  escape form the consequences of ones's evil deed.  
                  
                     13.      Na antalikkena Samuddamajjhe 

                                                      Na pabbatanam vivaram pavissa 

                                Na vijjati so jagatippadeso

                                                     yatthatthitam  nappasahetha maccu 


                                    DEATH CANNOT BE OVERCOME 

Meaning -  Not in the sky , nor in mid ocean , nor in a mountain cave ,                   is found  that place on earth where abiding one will 
                  not overcome by death.
