DANDA VAGGA 

(  THE ROD OR PUNISHMENT  ) 

                                                        1. Sabbe Thasanthi Dandassa 

                                                                                  Sabbe Bahayanthi Machcuno ,

                                                        Aththanan Upaman Kathwa

                                                                          Na hananeyia Na Gathaye .

Meaning -  All tremble at the Rod. All fear Death. Comparing others with your own self,

                     One should neither strike or Strike to kill.

                                                             Yo Dandena Vhimsathi   ,

                                 Attano Sukham esano,

                                                                 Pecca so ma labhate sukham

Meaning -  Whoever seeks his own happiness, harms with a rod other pleasure loving                              beings. , experiences no happiness thereafter.

                                                                   Easa Patto si Nibbanam

                                                                          Sarambho te na vijjati    

                     

SPEAK NOT HARSHLY    

Meaning - Speak not harshly to anyone. Those thus addressed will retort. 

                  Painfullindeed is vindictive speech. Blows in exchange may bruise you.  

Meaning - It is like a cracked gong, you silence yourself, you have already Nibbana. 

                  No   Vindictiveness will be found in you.

                                                    Evam jara ca maccu ca

                                                                Ayum pacenti paninam 

                                DECAY AND DEATH ARE UNIVERSAL

Meaning – As with staff the herdsman drives his kinas to pasture , even so do old age and death                               drive out the lives of beings

                                                               Karam balo na bujjati

                                                   Sehi kammehi dummendho

                                                            Aggi daddho va tappati 

                                   THE EVIL-DOER IS CONSUMED

                                   BY THE EFFECT OF HIS OWN EVIL 

Meaning – So. when a fool does wrong deeds,he does not realize  That by his own deeds the stupid                          man is tormented,   like one burnt by fire

 

                                           9. Yodandena Adandesu

                                                         Appadutthesu dussati

                                             Dassan nam annataram thanam

                                                       Khippameva nigacchati  

                                        10. Vedanam pharusam janim

                                                       Sari rassa ca bheda nam

                                            Garukam va pi abadham

                                                     Cittakkhe pam va papune 

                                       11. Raja ova passaggam

                                                    Abhakkhanam va daru nam

                                           Parikkhayam va nati nam

                                                  Bhoganam va pabhanguram 

                                    12. Atha v assa agarani

                                                  Aggi dahati pavako

                                        Kayassa bheda duppano

                                                Nira yam so papajjati

                       HE OFFENDS THE INNOCENT AND COMES TO GRIEF

Meaning – He who with the rod harms the rodless and harmless

                        Soon will come to one of these states

11- 12 –         He will be subject to acute pain, disaster, bodily injury or loss of mind

                      Or oppression by the king, heavy accusation or loss of relatives, or destruction of  

                     Wealth. On the other hand, he will burn his house. Finally upon the dissolution of

                     The body of such un- wise man will be born in hell    

13. Na naggacariya na jata na panka

                                                                        Nanasaka thandilasayika va

                                                    Rajo ca jallam ukkutikappadhanam

                                                                   So da henti naccam avitinna kankham

                                    EXTERNAL PENANCES CANNOT PURIFY A PERSON

Meaning – Not wandering naked , no matted locks , no filth ,no fasting ,nor lying on the                                            No dust ,no ashes ,nor striving squatting on the heels ,can purify a mortal who                                          Has not overcome the doubts 

                                             14.Alankato ce pi samam careyya

                                                                Santo danto niyato brahmachari

                                          Sabbesu bhutesu nidhayia dandam

                                                               So brahmano so samano sa bhikku

                               NOT BY EXTERNAL APPERANCE DOES ONE BECOME HOLY

Meaning –   Though gaily decked , if he should live in peace , ( with passions ) subdued ,

( and senses) controlled ,certain ( of the four paths of saint- hood ) perfectly                       pure Lying aside the rod (in his relations ) towards all living beings ,a Brahmana  

          Indeed is he , an ascetic is he ,a bhikku is he .

                        15. Hirinisedho puriso

                                                           Koci lokassmin vijjathi

                                       Yo nindam appbodhati

                                                          Asso bhadro kasam iva

                                THEMODEST ARE RARE IN THIS WORLD

Meaning –     ( Rarely ) is found in this world anyone who restrains by modesty

                      , avoids reproac, as a thoroughbred horse ( avoids )the whip.   

 

                             16. Asso yatha bhadro kasani vittho

                                                        Atapino samvegino bhavatha

                                 Saddhaya Silena ca viriyena ca

                                                       Samadhina dhamm vinicchayena ca

                               Sampanna  vijjacharana patissa tha

                                                      Paha satha dukkham idam anappakam

                                 BE VIRTUAS AND GET RID OF SUFFERING

Meaning – Like a through bred horse , touched by the whip , even so be  strenuous

                    and zealous .By confidence, by virtue , by effort , by concentration ,

                    by investigation of the truth , by being endowed with knowledge and conduct

                    nd by being mindful , get rid of this great suffering

 

 

                          17.Udakam hi nayanthi netttika

                                                  Usukara namyanthi thejanam

                             Darum namaynthi tacchaka

                                               Atta nam damayanthi subbata

                                     THE GOOD CONTROL THEMSELVES

Meaning – Irrigators lead the waters, Fletchers bend the shafts, carpenters bend the wood

                   The virtuous  control themselves
